Microsoft · AI-901 · Azure AI Fundamentals
AI-900 retired on 30 June 2026. AI-901 awards the same credential and is a noticeably harder exam: more than half of it is hands-on implementation in Microsoft Foundry, and Microsoft's own audience profile now expects Python syntax, Azure resources, and familiarity with REST APIs and SDKs.
Free practice across both domains. No card required.
You have a Microsoft Foundry project and need a customer-support prototype: a deployed generative model, a small chat client that calls it, and a single-agent solution you can try in the portal before you write a client for the agent.
Which two actions should you take? Select two.
Two choices only. Your earliest pick was dropped.
An original item written against the skills outline dated 15 April 2026. Not a real exam question.
AI-900 to AI-901
AI-900 walked through Azure's AI services one at a time and you could pass it on concepts. AI-901 is built around Microsoft Foundry, and the larger domain is entirely practical: deploying a model, building a client application, creating and testing an agent, working in the Foundry portal and SDK.
The concepts half is still there — responsible AI, how models work, the catalogue of AI workloads — but it's now the smaller half.
| AI-900 | AI-901 | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Retired 30 Jun 2026 | Current |
| Credential | Azure AI Fundamentals | Azure AI Fundamentals — the same one |
| Organised around | Individual Azure AI services | Microsoft Foundry |
| Larger domain | Concepts | Hands-on implementation |
| Assumed knowledge | Very little | Python syntax, Azure resources, REST and SDKs |
If someone told you the fundamentals exam is the easy one, that advice predates June 2026.
Who it's for
Microsoft describes the AI-901 candidate as someone at the beginning of a career in AI solution development — not someone with no technical background. The profile expects conceptual knowledge of AI solutions in Azure plus the foundational technical skills to work with them, knowledge of Python syntax and programming techniques, familiarity with Azure resources, and familiarity with REST APIs, SDKs and CLIs.
If none of that describes you, this is still a reachable exam, but budget for hands-on time in the Foundry portal rather than reading alone. Over half the marks are in the implementation domain and you can't revise your way through it.
Doesn't sound like you? SC-900 and MS-900 are genuinely non-technical fundamentals exams and may be a better first credential.
Scoring
Microsoft reports technical exams on a scale of 1 to 1,000, and 700 or above passes. It's a scaled score, so it doesn't correspond to answering 70% of questions correctly — how many you need depends on the difficulty of the ones you were given.
No penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave one blank. Some questions are worth more than one point.
You answered
Now change nothing except which form you were given
Same answers. Harder form, higher scaled score — that's what scaling is for. It's also why nobody can tell you the percentage you need.
Positions here are illustrative. Microsoft publishes the 1–1,000 scale and the 700 pass mark, but not the conversion from raw answers — which is the point. When a number can't be known exactly, a range is the honest way to report it.

The implementation domain tests deploying a model, a lightweight Foundry SDK client, and creating a single-agent solution in the portal. Responsible-AI mapping and vision fine-tuning are not how you build that prototype. Domain: Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry.

What you get back
Your readiness is a range, because it's an inference from the questions you've answered rather than a result you've earned. For a certification the outcome is binary, so the only question is whether the whole range sits above 700. While it straddles the line, you're a coin flip, and we'll say so.

Your range crosses the pass mark. On today's evidence it's a coin flip.
Three states
Try the three states. We won't show you a percentage chance of passing — nobody can calculate one honestly without years of real outcomes to calibrate against.

Domains
The outline is unusually short — two functional groups rather than the five or six most exams carry. That makes the weighting easy to act on.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry | 55–60% |
| Identify AI concepts and capabilities | 40–45% |
Weights are ranges because Microsoft publishes them as ranges. Skills measured as of 15 April 2026.
A two-domain outline looks simple and hides the shape of the exam. The implementation domain is the majority of your marks and it's the half you can't learn from a video. Deploy a model, build an agent, break something, fix it.
Responsible AI principles and how they map to concrete considerations — fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability — plus how generative models work, how you choose and configure them, and which AI workload fits a scenario: generative and agentic AI, text analysis, speech, computer vision, and information extraction.
Working in the Foundry portal and SDK: deploying a model, building a lightweight chat client, creating and testing an agent, and wiring up speech, vision, image-generation, and information-extraction solutions — including Azure Speech and Azure Content Understanding in Foundry Tools.
