Google Cloud certifications

Google tells you pass or fail. Nothing else.

No pass mark, no score, and a question count that varies by form. You find out on the day, for $125 or more. We can't give you Google's line — nobody can — but we can show you where you stand and be straight about what we measured it against.

ACEConfiguring access and securityMedium

An app on a Compute Engine VM in project A must write objects to a Cloud Storage bucket in project B. Security has ruled out long-lived keys. What do you do?

Select one.

An attached service account gets credentials from the metadata server, so nothing long-lived is stored anywhere. Granting the role on the bucket rather than the project keeps it to the one resource. A still creates a key. Putting it in Secret Manager protects it; it doesn't stop it existing. C makes the bucket public. D works and hands the VM edit rights over the whole project.

One choice only. Your earliest pick was dropped.

Where this question sits in the exam

Configuring access and security is ~20% of the Associate Cloud Engineer exam. Our mocks use the same mix.

Scoring

There's no number to aim at

Google doesn't publish a pass mark for the certifications we cover, and the standard exams give a question range rather than a count. So the percentages you see quoted on prep sites aren't Google's.

We still need a line to tell you anything useful, so we use 80% weighted accuracy and label it as ours. It's drawn dashed. On exams where the vendor publishes a pass mark — AWS at 720, say — the line is solid and it's theirs. You can tell which you're looking at.

We set it high deliberately. Too strict and you practise a week longer than you needed. Too lenient and you pay the fee twice.

The line on the chart is ours, because Google doesn't publish one for the exams we cover. What you can also see is which section is furthest behind the others.

Three years, then a short exam instead of the whole thing

Google Cloud Foundational and Associate certifications last three years. Renewing isn't the full exam again: the Associate Cloud Engineer renewal is 20 questions in an hour for $75, and you can start 180 days before you expire. There's also a route through designated Google Skills courses, which buys you a year at a time.

Practice here stays free between attempts, so the three years before your next sitting cost you nothing.
