TOEFL iBT · 2026 format

Four interview questions. Scored in points, not a band.

Take an Interview is four items, five points each. You get raw points and a diagnostic for elaboration, grammar, vocabulary and prosody — the 1–6 Speaking band comes from a full sitting. Reading and Listening adapt as you go, the same way the test has since January 2026.

  • Speaking and Writing scored against the task rubric, not a vague grade
  • Reading and Listening route adaptively, so the difficulty follows you
  • All four sections reported on the 1–6 scale the iBT uses now

Free practice across all four sections. No card required.

Describe the building on campus you use most often, and what you do there.

—

Four questions, each one harder than the last. ETS scores these in raw points, five per question — the 1 to 6 band is reported per section, from a full sitting. The 0 to 100 diagnostic beside the score is ours, not ETS's.

2026 format

The test changed. Most practice material hasn't.

On 21 January 2026, ETS shortened the iBT to roughly 90 minutes, made Reading and Listening adaptive, and replaced the 0–120 total with a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. Your overall score is now the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half point. During the transition to January 2028, score reports also carry a comparable 0–120 total and your CEFR level, so both numbers will follow you around for a while.

Practice built for the old format still works your English. It just won't tell you what your score will be.

Why these endings

Each blank is fixed by the words around it, not by the topic. A plural subject forces support, the quarter-of-all claim forces a countable noun, and the passive construction forces expelled.

What you get back

A sitting gives you a number. An estimate gives you a range.

When you finish a section, you get a section score, because it happened and it's measurable. Your ability estimate is different: it's an inference from every answer you've given, so it's reported as a range that narrows as you do more work. Anyone showing you a single predicted score is guessing and hiding it.

Until we have enough of your answers to say something useful, we show no estimate at all rather than a range so wide it's meaningless.

Where your ability sits now

A range, because an estimate without one is a guess dressed up as a fact.

Reading4.5–5.5
Listening4.0–5.0

Writing4.0–5.0

Flip between the two. A graded sitting gives you a number; an ability estimate gives you a range.

Content, Vocabulary, Pronunciation and Fluency, plus delivery timings: words per minute, pause count, filler rate, and how long you took to start. Mispronounced words are flagged in the transcript where they happened. Covers both task types: Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.

What the 2026 iBT actually asks

All figures come from the ETS per-section blueprint tables. Organised by task type, because that's what a test taker sees on screen. Twelve task types across four sections.

120 items, and a total test time between 1 hr 23 min and 1 hr 29 min depending on adaptive routing. ETS machine-scores 108 of those items and AI scores the other 12. Each section is reported on the 1–6 scale and the overall is the average of the four, so every section carries equal weight regardless of how many raw points it holds.
