CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) does not fail people for missing a flashcard. It fails people when a long stem, a performance-based simulation, and the 90-minute clock arrive together.
If your prep is mostly untimed PDFs, you are measuring the wrong thing. Good Security+ practice looks like a sitting: the five published domains, a real clock, and a readout that separates "knew the control" from "got it before time ran out."
Same measurement idea as Know your score before test day. Why CompTIA is on Acedify at all: Why we're building CompTIA Security+.
What "good" is not#
- A rising percent on shuffled dumps with no timer.
- Memorising answer letters from leaked sets.
- Skipping simulations because "I'll just do the multiple-choice."
- Treating a green dashboard as CompTIA saying you hit 750.
Understanding matters. So does the budget. SY0-701 scores both whether you know the security decision and whether you can make it inside the sitting.
Warning
Untimed dumps measure eventual correctness. The exam measures security decisions under a clock — including performance-based items. Those are different skills.
The sitting's own language#
Practice should speak Security+, not "IT trivia."
That means items framed across CompTIA's five SY0-701 domains — General Security Concepts, Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations, Security Architecture, Security Operations, Security Program Management and Oversight — with explanations tied to the line that decides the answer: the control you under-weighted, the threat model you blurred, the operational step that belongs to a different phase.
On Acedify, free practice is untimed on purpose: learn the deciding line first. Timed mode is where you find out whether that knowledge survives 90 minutes and up to 90 questions.
CompTIA describes a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Simulations approximate an environment or tool — a firewall, a network diagram, a terminal, an OS surface. Partial credit may apply; more than one path can be accepted; you can skip and return; work saves. Practice that never touches that shape trains the wrong sitting.
We do not claim how many PBQs are on a form, whether they are worth more than an MCQ, or how many items you need correct to reach 750. CompTIA does not publish those details.
Timed practice: the shape of a useful block#
A useful timed block for SY0-701 does four things:
- Runs on the exam clock — 90 minutes; you feel the cost of re-reading a long stem twice or abandoning a simulation too late.
- Keeps domain signal — after the block, you see which of the five domains (with published weights) is holding the estimate back.
- Accounts for every second — per-question time against budget, not only right/wrong.
- Updates a range — readiness against CompTIA's published 750 on the 100–900 scale, labelled as Acedify's estimate — not an official CompTIA score.
If your timed practice only prints "78%," you still do not know whether you are ready to book.
Pacing buckets beat vanity accuracy#
After a timed sitting, every item should land somewhere honest:
| Bucket | What it usually means on Security+ |
|---|---|
| Fluent | Correct inside budget — the control or process call was ready |
| Fragile | Correct, but you burned the clock — risky when a simulation stacks next |
| Guessed | Flagged, rushed, or out of time |
| Gap | Wrong for a knowledge or reading reason you can name |
A candidate at 70% fluent is in a different place than a candidate at 70% fragile. Same accuracy label. Different booking decision.

Tip
Fragile-correct on Security Operations stems is common: you "know" the playbook until the stem adds a second constraint or a simulation. Drill that surface, then sit again.
Drill the gap, then sit again#
Between timed sittings, drill what moves the estimate.
If the range says Threats and Mitigations is opening under time, the next untimed block should live there in exam language — then return to a timed module to see whether fragile became fluent.
Random topic roulette feels productive. Measurement says otherwise. Adaptive practice on Acedify aims for about three-in-four right, not a wall of impossible stems — why we stopped giving you the hardest questions.
Free vs Pro#
Free: unlimited practice, explanations, domain coverage, raw accuracy. Clear vocabulary and obvious misconceptions before you burn timed focus.
Pro: timed sittings, readiness range, adaptive selection, per-question time breakdown, coaching on demand.
Plans and pricing live on the site; this post does not hardcode them.
Book when the range is honest#
Book SY0-701 when timed sittings land mostly Fluent on the domains that carry weight for you, Fragile is shrinking, and the readiness range has narrowed across sittings — not because an untimed dump said 85%.
