The Digital SAT is shorter, adaptive, and computer-based — 2 hours 14 minutes. Content still matters; so does pacing under the module clock. This guide covers each section with exam-native strategy.

Understanding the Digital SAT#

The Digital SAT is fundamentally different from the paper test:

FeatureDigital SAT
Duration2 hours 14 minutes
FormatAdaptive within each section
Questions98 total (54 R&W + 44 Math)
Score Range400–1600 (200–800 per section)
CalculatorBuilt-in Desmos on ALL math questions

Note

Adaptive Testing: Each section has two modules. Your performance on Module 1 determines whether Module 2 is harder or easier. Doing well on Module 1 unlocks higher-difficulty questions in Module 2—and higher potential scores.

Reading & Writing Section#

The R&W section (64 minutes, 54 questions) tests your ability to comprehend, analyze, and edit written English. Every question is passage-based, but passages are SHORT (25–150 words).

Information & Ideas (26% of R&W)#

These questions test whether you can extract meaning from text: central ideas, supporting details, inferences, and interpreting data.

Key Strategies:

  • Read for structure, not just content — Identify the main claim and how evidence supports it
  • Wrong answers often use passage words in wrong contexts — Verify that the meaning matches
  • Inferences must be directly supported — If you're "stretching," it's probably wrong

Tip

The SAT never asks you to make creative leaps. Correct inferences feel almost obvious when you re-read the supporting text.

Practice: Information & Ideas#

The following is from a research summary: "A 2024 study examined the effects of background music on reading comprehension. Participants who read in silence scored an average of 82%, while those listening to instrumental music scored 79%, and those listening to music with lyrics scored 68%. The researchers concluded that familiar songs with lyrics may divert cognitive resources toward processing the linguistic content of the music." Based on the text, which statement is best supported?

Craft & Structure (28% of R&W)#

These questions test vocabulary in context, text structure, purpose, and cross-text analysis.

Words in Context Strategy:

  1. Cover the word and read the sentence
  2. Predict what word SHOULD go there based on context
  3. Find the answer choice that matches your prediction
  4. Verify by plugging it back in

Warning

Trap Alert: Wrong answers often include common meanings of the word that don't fit THIS context. "Grave" might usually mean "serious," but if the passage discusses burial sites, the answer might be different.

Practice: Craft & Structure#

Craft & Structure Practice

In the following sentence, what is the meaning of "arrested" as used? "The detective's attention was arrested by a small detail others had overlooked: a single fingerprint on the window's interior edge."

Standard English Conventions (26% of R&W)#

Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. The SAT tests specific, predictable rules.

Most Frequently Tested:

  1. Subject-verb agreement (especially with interrupting phrases)
  2. Pronoun clarity and agreement
  3. Punctuation (commas, semicolons, colons, dashes)
  4. Sentence boundaries (run-ons, fragments, comma splices)
  5. Modifier placement

Tip

Subject-Verb Agreement Trick: Cross out all phrases between commas. The subject and verb must agree WITHOUT those interruptions: "The collection of rare coins [is/are] valuable" → "The collection IS valuable."

Key Punctuation Rules#

PunctuationUse Case
SemicolonJoins two complete sentences
ColonIntroduces a list, explanation, or emphasis (after a complete sentence)
DashSets off parenthetical info or creates emphasis
Comma + FANBOYSJoins two complete sentences (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

Practice: Standard English Conventions#

Grammar & Conventions Practice

Select the correct version: "The team of researchers, after reviewing thousands of data points, _______ ready to publish their findings."

Math Section#

The Math section (70 minutes, 44 questions) tests algebra, advanced math, problem-solving with data, and geometry/trigonometry. You have a built-in Desmos calculator for ALL questions.

Algebra (35% of Math)#

Linear equations, inequalities, systems of equations, and linear functions form the foundation.

Power Strategies:

  • Desmos is your friend — Graph both sides of an equation to find intersection points
  • For systems, look for elimination opportunities — Multiply to cancel variables
  • Translate words carefully — "5 more than x" = x + 5, not 5 + x (though equivalent, the SAT tests translation)

Note

Systems with Infinite/No Solutions:

  • Infinite solutions: equations are multiples of each other (same line)
  • No solutions: parallel lines (same slope, different y-intercepts)

Practice: Algebra#

Algebra Practice

A phone plan charges a $25 monthly fee plus $0.10 per text message. A second plan charges $15 monthly plus $0.15 per text. For what number of texts do both plans cost the same?

Advanced Math (35% of Math)#

Quadratics, polynomials, exponential functions, and nonlinear equations.

Quadratics Essentials:

  • Vertex form: f(x) = a(x - h)² + k, vertex at (h, k)
  • Standard form: f(x) = ax² + bx + c, vertex x-coordinate at -b/(2a)
  • Factored form: f(x) = a(x - r)(x - s), roots at r and s

Tip

Finding the Vertex: For f(x) = ax² + bx + c, the x-coordinate of the vertex is ALWAYS -b/(2a). Plug back in to find the y-coordinate. This is faster than completing the square.

Practice: Advanced Math#

Advanced Math Practice

The function f(x) = -(x - 3)² + 16 models the height of a ball in feet, where x is time in seconds. What is the maximum height the ball reaches?

Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (15% of Math)#

Ratios, percentages, probability, statistics, and interpreting graphs/tables.

Key Formulas:

  • Percent change: (New - Old) / Old × 100
  • Probability: P(A) = favorable outcomes / total outcomes
  • Mean: Sum of values / number of values
  • Weighted average: (value₁ × weight₁ + value₂ × weight₂) / (weight₁ + weight₂)

Warning

Common Trap: Percent increase vs. percent of. "The price increased by 20%" means multiply by 1.20. "The sale price is 20% of the original" means multiply by 0.20. Read carefully.

Practice: Problem-Solving & Data Analysis#

Problem-Solving Practice

A store increases prices by 25%, then offers a 25% discount during a sale. Compared to the original price, the final sale price is:

Geometry & Trigonometry (15% of Math)#

Area, volume, coordinate geometry, angles, and trigonometric ratios.

Must-Know Formulas:

ShapeFormula
Circle areaπr²
Circle circumference2πr
Triangle area½ × base × height
Pythagorean theorema² + b² = c²
SOHCAHTOAsin = O/H, cos = A/H, tan = O/A

Note

Special Right Triangles:

  • 45-45-90: sides in ratio 1 : 1 : √2
  • 30-60-90: sides in ratio 1 : √3 : 2 These appear frequently and save time vs. using Pythagorean theorem.

Practice: Geometry & Trigonometry#

Geometry Practice

In a right triangle, one angle measures 30°. If the side opposite the 30° angle has length 5, what is the length of the hypotenuse?

Tip

Mark and Move: If a question is taking too long, mark it and move on. You can return later. Spending 3 minutes on one question means rushing 3 others.

Answer Elimination#

On multiple choice, eliminating wrong answers is as valuable as knowing the right one:

  • Eliminate extremes: Words like "always," "never," "all," "none" are often wrong
  • Eliminate scope errors: Answers that are too broad or too narrow for what's asked
  • Eliminate out-of-passage claims: Answers requiring outside knowledge

Calculator Strategy (Math)#

The Desmos calculator is powerful. Use it for:

  • Graphing equations to find intersections (systems of equations)
  • Plugging in answer choices to verify
  • Checking arithmetic on multi-step calculations
  • Visualizing functions to understand behavior
