The Azure AI Fundamentals exam (AI-900) validates foundational knowledge of AI and machine learning concepts plus Microsoft Azure AI services. These five domains map directly to the exam outline — use them as your study spine.
1. AI Workloads & Responsible AI Principles#
Understanding what AI can do—and how to do it responsibly—is foundational. This domain covers common AI workloads and Microsoft's framework for responsible AI.
Tip
Microsoft emphasizes Responsible AI heavily on the exam. Memorize the six principles: Fairness, Reliability & Safety, Privacy & Security, Inclusiveness, Transparency, and Accountability.
Common AI Workloads#
| Workload | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Vision | Analyze and interpret visual content | Product defect detection, facial recognition |
| Natural Language Processing | Understand and generate human language | Chatbots, sentiment analysis, translation |
| Generative AI | Create new content from prompts | Text generation, image creation, code completion |
| Document Intelligence | Extract information from documents | Invoice processing, form recognition |
| Knowledge Mining | Extract insights from unstructured data | Search across enterprise documents |
Responsible AI Principles#
Microsoft's six principles for responsible AI development:
- Fairness — AI systems should treat all people equitably
- Reliability & Safety — AI should perform reliably and safely
- Privacy & Security — AI should be secure and respect privacy
- Inclusiveness — AI should empower everyone and engage people
- Transparency — AI systems should be understandable
- Accountability — People should be accountable for AI systems
Warning
Exam trap: Inclusiveness is about ensuring AI benefits everyone, including people with disabilities. Fairness is about treating groups equitably—don't confuse them.
An AI hiring system is found to favor candidates from certain universities over equally qualified candidates from other schools. Which responsible AI principle is being violated?
2. Machine Learning Fundamentals#
Machine learning is the engine behind most AI systems. The exam tests your understanding of ML types, core concepts, and Azure Machine Learning capabilities.
Types of Machine Learning#
| Type | Description | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised Learning | Learn from labeled data | Predicting house prices, classifying emails as spam |
| Unsupervised Learning | Find patterns in unlabeled data | Customer segmentation, anomaly detection |
| Reinforcement Learning | Learn through trial and reward | Game playing, robotics, resource optimization |
Supervised Learning: Classification vs Regression#
Note
This distinction is exam-critical! Classification predicts categories (spam/not spam, approve/deny). Regression predicts continuous values (price, temperature, sales amount).
| Task | Output Type | Example | Metrics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classification | Discrete categories | Will customer churn? (Yes/No) | Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1 |
| Regression | Continuous numbers | How much will customer spend? | MAE, RMSE, R² |
Unsupervised Learning: Clustering#
Clustering groups similar data points together without predefined labels:
- K-Means — Groups data into K clusters
- Hierarchical clustering — Creates a tree of clusters
- DBSCAN — Finds clusters of varying density
Azure Machine Learning Capabilities#
Azure Machine Learning provides a complete platform for the ML lifecycle:
- Designer — Drag-and-drop ML pipeline builder (no code)
- Automated ML (AutoML) — Automatically trains and tunes models
- Notebooks — Jupyter notebooks for custom code
- MLflow — Track experiments and manage model lifecycle
- Managed Endpoints — Deploy models for real-time or batch inference
Tip
AutoML tries multiple algorithms and hyperparameters for you — a frequent AI-900 / DP-100 comparison point against manual training.
A real estate company wants to predict house sale prices based on features like size, location, and age. Which type of machine learning task is this?
3. Computer Vision on Azure#
Computer vision enables machines to interpret visual information. Azure provides both pre-built and customizable vision capabilities.
Computer Vision Task Types#
| Task | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Image Classification | Assign labels to entire images | "This is a cat" vs "This is a dog" |
| Object Detection | Identify and locate objects with bounding boxes | Find all cars in a parking lot image |
| Semantic Segmentation | Classify each pixel in an image | Autonomous driving scene understanding |
| OCR | Extract text from images | Read text from scanned documents |
| Face Detection/Analysis | Detect faces and analyze attributes | Verify identity, detect emotions |
Azure AI Vision Services#
| Service | Capability | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Azure AI Vision | Pre-built image analysis (tags, captions, objects) | General image understanding without training |
| Custom Vision | Train custom classifiers and detectors | Your specific categories (product defects, custom objects) |
| Face API | Face detection, verification, identification | Identity verification, attendance tracking |
| Video Indexer | Extract insights from videos | Searchable video archives, speaker identification |
Warning
Exam trap: Know the difference between Image Analysis (pre-built, general-purpose) and Custom Vision (trainable with your data). If the scenario requires detecting YOUR specific objects or categories, you need Custom Vision.
Custom Vision: Classification vs Object Detection#
- Classification — Predicts what's in the entire image ("This is a defective product")
- Object Detection — Finds multiple objects and their locations ("3 scratches at these coordinates")
A factory needs to detect specific defect types (scratches, dents, cracks) on products using images. They have 1,000 labeled training images. Which service should they use?
4. Natural Language Processing (NLP)#
NLP enables machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. Azure AI Language provides comprehensive NLP capabilities.
Core NLP Capabilities#
| Capability | Description | Example Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Language Detection | Identify the language of text | Route support tickets by language |
| Sentiment Analysis | Determine tone (positive/negative/neutral) | Analyze customer reviews |
| Key Phrase Extraction | Extract main topics and concepts | Summarize document themes |
| Named Entity Recognition (NER) | Identify entities (people, places, organizations) | Extract company names from news |
| Entity Linking | Link entities to knowledge bases | Connect "Microsoft" to Wikipedia entry |
Conversational AI Services#
| Service | Purpose | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Conversational Language Understanding (CLU) | Train models to understand intents and extract entities | Build custom intent recognition for bots |
| Question Answering | Build knowledge bases from Q&A pairs | FAQ bots, support documentation |
| Azure Bot Service | Build and deploy conversational bots | Multi-channel bot deployment |
Tip
CLU vs Question Answering: CLU trains a model to understand user intent ("I want to check my order" → OrderStatus intent). Question Answering finds the best answer from a knowledge base ("What are your hours?" → "We're open 9-5").
Azure AI Speech Services#
| Service | Description |
|---|---|
| Speech-to-Text | Transcribe audio to text |
| Text-to-Speech | Convert text to natural-sounding speech |
| Speech Translation | Real-time speech translation |
| Speaker Recognition | Identify and verify speakers by voice |
Note
Speech services are often combined with Language services. Example: Transcribe a call (Speech-to-Text) → Analyze sentiment (Language) → Generate summary (Language).
A company receives customer feedback in multiple languages. They need to understand whether feedback is positive or negative. Which two Azure AI Language features should they use?
5. Generative AI & Azure OpenAI Service (20-25%)#
Generative AI is the highest weighted domain on the exam. It covers creating new content—text, images, code, and more—using Azure OpenAI Service and models like GPT-4, DALL-E, and Whisper.
Generative AI Concepts#
Note
Generative AI uses Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on massive text datasets. They predict the most likely next tokens based on input, enabling human-like text generation.
| Concept | Description |
|---|---|
| Prompt | Input text that instructs the model |
| Completion | The model's generated response |
| Tokens | Units of text the model processes (roughly 4 characters = 1 token) |
| Temperature | Controls randomness (0 = deterministic, 1 = creative) |
| Hallucination | When models generate plausible but factually incorrect content |
Azure OpenAI Service Models#
| Model | Capability |
|---|---|
| GPT-4 / GPT-4o | Advanced reasoning, coding, multimodal understanding |
| GPT-3.5 Turbo | Fast, cost-effective text generation |
| DALL-E 3 | Image generation from text descriptions |
| Whisper | Speech-to-text transcription |
| Embeddings | Convert text to vectors for semantic search |
Prompt Engineering#
Effective prompting dramatically improves results:
| Technique | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| System message | Set the model's persona and rules | "You are a helpful assistant that only answers questions about Azure" |
| Few-shot learning | Provide examples in the prompt | Show 3 examples of the format you want |
| Chain of thought | Ask the model to explain reasoning | "Think step by step..." |
Warning
Hallucination is a major exam topic! LLMs can confidently generate false information. Mitigation strategies include grounding (RAG), temperature reduction, and validation.
Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)#
RAG combines retrieval and generation to ground responses in your data:
- Index your documents in Azure AI Search
- Retrieve relevant chunks based on user query
- Include retrieved content in the prompt
- Generate grounded response using your data
